By the age of 7, McIlroy was already showing exceptional talent on the golf course. He quickly progressed through junior tournaments and caught the attention of local coaches and players for his natural ability and dedication to the game. He continued to dominate junior and amateur competitions, eventually earning a spot on the Irish National Team.

At the age of 17, he was the number-one-ranked amateur in the world for a week. McIlroy earned his European Tour card in just two starts, the fastest in history. He won his first professional title at the Dubai Desert Classic in the UAE, a country where he lived for four years during the early part of his career. He shot a course record 62 to win his first PGA Tour event at the Quail Hollow Championship, where he finished with six consecutive birdies to become the first player since Tiger Woods to win on the PGA Tour before his 21st birthday.

He has gone on to win at Quail Hollow a further three times. He supports Manchester United and is also an Ulster Rugby fan. He has also been spotted attending tennis majors. He lost a four stroke lead in the final round of the Masters before going on to win his maiden Major at the US Open just two months later by eight strokes. He set a number of records that week at Congressional CCincluding the lowest ever US Open score of as he became the youngest champion since Bobby Jones in He beat Jack Nicklaus' seven-stroke winning margin set in He has held the position for over weeks.

He has not won a Major since.

He injured himself playing football in the summer of and subsequently missed the chance to defend his Open Championship title at St Andrews. He was engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniaki but the pair broke up in His caddie Harry Diamond is his childhood best friend and the best man at his wedding. The pair teamed up in after McIlroy broke off his eight-year partnership with JP Fitzgerald, who he won all four of his Majors with.

They famously met while he was running late for his tee time on the final day of the Ryder Cup. They have one child together, a daughter named Poppy. While his accent has developed a transatlantic twang, his style is now all-star polish, his wife is a classy New Yorker with all the right connections, Rory McIlroy, 27, still has his feet planted firmly on the ground.

A year and a half later their son Rory was born. Hard work and dedication melded into an attitude and lifestyle inside the McIlroy home. Week days were tough and busy, weekends were busier but much more fun. Rosie worked the night shift in the 3M factory, leaving dinner prepared for Gerry and Rory. For the first six hour he worked as a bar tender at Holywood Golf Club, before a quick dash home for dinner and then back into work at a sports club for 7pm for an other five hours or more.

The McIlroys were not greedy for money or fine cars, they did not build expensive extensions on their home and social climbing was an alien concept. All the hard work and long hours were in dedication to one person - a little boy called Rory. For if anyone saw sporting potential in the lad, it was his father, a scratch golfer. But once you get older, and you know a bit more about the world, you realise how much sacrifice they made for you.

I get goose bumps just thinking about it. Rivalries were fierce between Holywood Gold Club and Royal Belfast with its reputation for haughtiness, pro-Protestant members, Catholic barman and keen golfer, Gerry McIlroy, was encouraged to bring his son to the course after finishing his work at the bar in Holywood. He was often seen hitting balls with Rory sat in his pram.

At 10 months old, Rory was crawling around on the tee. By the time he was two, Rory had plastic clubs and balls of his own, a typical rite of passage in many Northern Ireland homes. He hit the balls so hard the plastic clubs broke and eventually Gerry and his pals cut down a proper club for him.
