RW: How long did he practice for? LZ: Whenever he was going to do a torch relay [Zamperini carried the Olympic torch five times], he was out there for months ahead of time practicing for it. He would run a kilometer; he would time himself. MB: A funny aside on that, in terms of how powerful this footage is. It turns out that CBS owned that footage, so when I started production on the film, I was responsible for making sure we got that footage.
Most corporations are not really helpful to one another, but CBS was actually willing to let us get that footage because they, too, knew that it was so important to Lou, and to Draggan who made the documentary, that the footage had to be in the film because it meant so much. RW: What did you think about the running scenes in the film? Had you ever seen your dad running in old footage?

LZ: Oh yeah, of course. He had such a unique physique and style of running that it would be hard for anyone to replicate. RW: I noticed when Jack crossed the finish line he did it with a flourish, with his shoulders. Was that characteristic of your dad? Dad just went right across [the finish line]. We dug it up after he passed away. But I love the drama that Jack put into that.
It makes for a beautiful moment cinematically.

RW: Did your dad see that running footage? She showed him the running and the survival at sea scenes. RW: Do you know what he thought about the running scenes? RW: When you say he had a unique physique and running style can you explain that? LZ: Well, okay, so he had long legs, and his stride involved his hips shifting in such a way that it actually increased his stride.
CZG: It was almost like his legs were disengaged, they reached longer. And he had enormous lungs. But he was training his lungs to expand and hold more air for his running. LZ: Which came in handy in the plane crash in the Pacific, of course. CZG: And he trained running up sand hills, running uphill. LZ: Running up stairs at the coliseum.
