In late November, a statement from Hekmatyar called on then-President-elect Barack Obama to avoid sending more troops to Afghanistan. But in a recent interview on June 4, with the Kandahar-based Benawa. They accused him of abusing Iranian hospitality with his comments vowing to fight the Karzai administration. He returned to an undisclosed location in Afghanistan following threats by the Afghan government to arrest him and try him for war crimes.

He proposed intra-Afghan talks to form an inclusive government to replace the current interim Taliban government. Inthe Taliban cracked down on Hekmatyar, forcing him out of his government residence and shutting down his weekly sermons and the TV station that aired them.
