Lee narrowly escaped being rounded up and killed in the Sook Ching massacre, one of the most large-scale atrocities of the occupation years. He later said he believed between 50, andpeople had died, and that the British failure to prevent the massacre was further proof that Singaporeans should be free to rule themselves. During the war, he went on to work as a Japanese interpreter and ran his own black market glue business.
After the war, Lee belatedly began his university education, studying first at the prestigious London School of Economics and then at Cambridge. While in England he married Kwa Geok Choo seen above ina brilliant Singaporean scholar and later lawyer, at a secret ceremony in Stratford-upon-Avon. In he turned his back on a possible British legal career and returned to Singapore, where he practised law and became involved in the trade union movement.

His eye image with his autograph was auctioned off to raise funds for the Singapore Eye Research Institute. Inpoet Cyril Wong published The Dictator's Eyebrowa poetry collection revolving around a Lee-like figure and his eyebrow's thirst for recognition and power. InBruneian painter Huifong Ng landed an exhibition after painting a portrait of Lee.
The series was later translated into Mandarin. Vietnamese artist Mai Huy Dung has crafted a series of oil painting portraits of Lee. The portrait was made in tribute to Lee, who was then critically ill. Yee also posted on his blog a stick-figure cartoon depicting Lee having sex with Margaret Thatchera personal and political ally of Lee's.
