Pittu left India on a journey which was to take many unexpected turns over his eventful life. A number of intellectual passions influenced his thinking. From literature, the expressive beauty of the prose and poetry of T. Eliot, Shakespeare and the Indian classics informed his writing and gave elegance to his expression; from philosophy, the clarity of thought associated in particular with Bertrand Russell Russell, made a profound and lasting impact.
I think Pittu could claim much affinity with those sentiments. For in Ann he found the love of his life and companion through his later troubled years of ill health. In terms of knowledge, his work was influenced by two immense epistemological streams. The first was the Socratic method of dialectical inquiry trying to pierce out the truth through confronting argument.
However, knowledge was founded not on a search for an absolute unyielding truth. On the contrary his thinking was Popperian in that any hypothesis or theory was true only insofar as it could withstand intellectual scrutiny and that it was inherently testable, open to refutation at any time. In this respect, his unique immersion [Page ] in Western rationality and Eastern faith gave him that necessary distance to see the strengths and flaws in both systems and were to feed his immense contribution to the growing discipline of cross-cultural psychology.
Pittu's educational upbringing in Mumbai combined a formal Jesuitical schooling with a traditional Hindu upbringing; so his early formative years were formed in a sort of cultural tapestry and he capitalized on it later. This led him initially into counselling and psychotherapy both of which, he felt, relied too much on an unquestioned rationality without sufficiently understanding both oneself and the other's beliefs, and how other people constructed their own world views.
Admittedly, as he knew all too well, this was an immensely difficult task when different cultures and moralities were involved. He never despaired of the human condition and did much to enlighten our understanding through his academic and also practical work in hospitals and personal counselling.
