Among his other works were six piano sonatas, a violin sonata and a cello sonata. As a lied composer he should be considered as one of the most remarkable names of the 20th century. It is no wonder, then, that during the s and 40s he was internationally the most well-known Finnish composer after Jean Sibelius. Kilpinen's friendship with the German national-socialistic leaders brought him a bad name after the war, after which he was more or less a "persona non grata".

His early compositions gained recognition in Finland, and from onwards, he received a state scholarship, which was later converted into a lifetime pension in This financial security allowed him to dedicate himself fully to composition. InKilpinen was appointed a member of the Finnish Academy, and inhe became an honorary member of the Composers' Association of Finland.
Kilpinen's compositions include both instrumental works 6 piano sonatas, cello sonata, etc. He wrote approximately songs, many of which were written in cycles based on Finnish, Swedish, and German poetry.
